I am big on making your life "green" as possible.

Previously, I have talked about entirely heating my house off used motor oil and now I have taken up the job of installing Energy Star energy efficient windows in my house. I spend three quarters of the winter in Portland, OR and "green" is the thing to be down here. So, when in Rome, do as they do.

As I having been talking to certain people who are absolutely obsessed with living the green way it has fired me out to way finds I can live as green as possible as well.

It is estimated that since this Energy Star program was started back in 1992 literally hundreds of billions of dollars have been saved in energy. 18 billion was saved in the year 2008 alone and that number can only rise. The population is not going down so how can that number?

Replacing your outdated windows with new ones will not be cheap but part of the latest stimulus package gives all homeowners a big incentive to do so. Up toll the end of 2016 you will be able to get a tax credit of 30% of the cost any new energy efficient window you buy with the Energy Star label.

The stimulus includes other items as well but the great part about windows is that there is no upper limit. This means that if you bought $10,000 worth of new windows you could deduct $3,000 from your taxes. There is no limit unlike some other items which only go up to $1,500.

So you can actually spend money for these major home improvement upgrades, save money on reduced energy consumption, and get a portion of that money you spent back from the government. Seems like a sweet deal to me. Here are the details for the energy efficiency tax credits.

I was sold after I did the calculations of the amount of of heat these types of windows help you save. They can really make a difference versus getting the less expensive single and double pane clear glass windows.

Replacing your windows with these more green friendly windows can net you an additional $460 every year if you live in pacific northwest like Alaska or Oregon and $465 if you live in New England. That is a nice chunk of change to put back into your pocket yearly.

I starting do more and more research and was just dumbfounded by the amount of money people are wasting every single month and year by having drafty windows.

They may not realize it but heat is escaping from their house as soon as their boiler or furnace can produce it. And like a slow leaking tire its not obvious at first until you get your monthly natural gas/ heating oil bill in the mail.

Contract a Portland window replacement company that specializes in green construction or installation and start checking out prices. You will probably find that it is cheaper than you think. And it can save you a lot of money over the course of several years. Plus, why be wasteful? If everyone does their part to consume less we as a society won't always be looking for more.
